Max Frisch (born 1911) is a German-speaking Swiss.
The Fire Raisers began life as a short prose passage in Frisch’s Diary 1946-1949, became a radio play in 1953 and was adapted for the stage in 1957.
The play opened in Zurich as “Bicdermann und die Brandstifter” and was first produced in England in 1961 at the Royal Court Theatre.
Like Brecht, Frisch employs devices to alienate his audience, so that they may observe not merely WHAT happens but WHY it happens.
Yet in judging Biedermann and those whom he represents we should remember – as the chorus puts it – that ‘he who sees from without…. more quickly perceives the peril that threatens.’ Frisch does not allow our individual conscience to escape judgement either.
Everyone must answer for himself Biedermann’s crucial question: ‘What would you have done in my place, damn it all, and when?’

Information by Mark Ian Smithard (10 Oct 2009):- “4th on the right hand line (3rd behind Noddy Grant!) is my big brother David Smithard. He is a Consultant in Geriatric and Stroke Medicine, and heads up Stroke Medicine Research.”
“Looks like Malcolm Grant is on right at front, behind him Steve Bailey, Brian “Basher” Quin, then as you point out, David Smithard, an unknown, and Dave “Caveman” Murray. Afraid I don’t know the rest. Although is the back one Keith Chambers?” Paul Skelton.
“In the Rugby 1978 picture…on the left second back from the front is Neil McClusky then John Ratcliff …right at the back top of the picture is Martin Michael…I was playing outside centre in that game for the team on the right. I am out of picture….I will take a look again…to see if I can recognise Mr Chambers….” Rex Fletcher.

1978 Play – “The Fire Raisers” (1)
Does anyone remember any of those shown above? If so I would be interested to hear from you.
I can name a couple… there’s Paul Beecham, left hand side, middle row and Dean Chatburn bottom row far right.
“Regarding the ‘Fire Raisers’ photo, here are the names for you…
Back row left is Byron Chatburn in heavy make up and veil as Frau Knechtling (an old lady)
The firemen at the back from left to right are Rodney Haddrell, Peter Wicks, Steve Covell, KeithTolputt and Robin Bulow.
Don’t know the bloke in the grey jumper, but next to him is Karen Alder from the girls grammar as the maid and then Robert Dale on the end who was stage manager…(possibly the guy in grey jumper was his assistant Michale Slater?)
Middle row from left is indeed Paul Beecham (in charge of lighting), then Simon Marples as Herr Biedermann, Adrian Hodges as Schmitz a fire raiser, then me with foot over table as Eisenring (another fire raiser) then Siobhan Doran from the girls Grammar school as Frau Biedermann.
Can’t recall name of bloke front row left in white, but second is Peter Marsh, then Billy Newman, Roger Lewis, Nick Cooper, can’t place the guy in the school tie, but far right is Dean Chatburn.
Steve Walker.”
“The person in the white shirt on the bottom left (as we look at the photo) is me, Martin Dench. Peter Marsh is indeed sitting on my left. (I have no idea why I was showing my leg .).”
