AGM 2023 – Saturday 14 October 2023

This year’s Old Pharosians’ AGM will take place in the new school buildings. We hope that as many as possible will be there. This is an important meeting as it will give OPs a chance to have their say about the future of the association. We particularly welcome nominations from OPs for the positions of president and secretary. These are two important roles, which are key to the future success of the association.

More details about the day will be provided in the autumn. The outline programme for the day is below

Programme

  • 11:00 – School opens for tea and coffee
  • 12:00 – Old Pharosians Association annual general meeting – Agenda and 2021 minutes attached. Please bring a copy with you if possible.
  • 13:00 – Buffet lunch – There is no set charge, but donations towards the cost of catering will be gratefully received
  • 13:45 – Opportunity to tour the new school buildings
  • 15:00 – Close

Note that while there is no charge for entrance to the events, nor for the light lunch, donations towards the costs of catering will be gratefully received on the day.

Although this is an Association event we are happy to welcome old boys and former members of staff who are not Association members to the whole event (though there are elements of formal business during the meeting that only members can vote on).

Old boys and staff members who are not yet members of the Association may take this opportunity to join (for which membership fees no longer apply) just by clicking the link to the Membership Application form on the website and completing the details.

Minutes from the last AGM (September 2021) and the Agenda for the 2023 AGM may be viewed or downloaded by clicking the links in this sentence.

If you have any questions about the event please click the link to use the Contact Form at the website and we shall respond promptly.

Access and parking

*** NOTE – THERE IS NO ACCESS WHATSOEVER FROM NOAH’S ARK ROAD. ***

  • Wherever possible, we encourage you to car share or use public transport to travel to the school for the AGM.
  • Access to the school is from Astor Avenue, onto the drive and hill.
  • Please drive carefully on the hill, no more than 10 mph. There may be people walking on the hill or vehicles travelling in the opposite direction.
  • There is parking available outside the school (Turn left from the hill onto the top field level), and on the right hand side of the drive (when facing the school) at the bottom of the hill.
  • Registered blue badge holders will have spaces reserved on the top level, nearest the school building. The remaining spaces on the top level will be on a ‘first come first served’ basis.
  • In the unlikely event that we run out of space within the school grounds, on street parking is available on Northbourne Avenue, just off Astor Avenue.
  • Please park considerately, so other vehicles can pass and we can make best use of the spaces available

William Fittall

The Association is very sorry to have to report the that the President of the Old Pharosians, Sir William Fittall, died on 10 March 2022 after a short illness.

Having attended the school as a pupil from 1964-72, William was a very active member of the Association in later years. He served twice as President of the OPA, from 1991-1992 and again from 2017 until the present.

In the most recent period he had been instrumental in moving the Association forward by changing from a subscription based membership system to one based on donations and in revising the Constitution of the Association in line with best practice of the Charity Commission.

He will be sorely missed by all those former pupils of DGSB and members of staff who knew him.

The Committee of the Association will meet in due course to appoint a successor.

DGSB Piano Appeal

In the recent printed Newsletter we promised to provide further details of the school’s major fundraising appeal for new pianos as soon as the information was available. Below is the leaflet that the school has issued this week setting out the need and how we can each contribute, whether by bank transfer or using our JustGiving page. In either event, gift aiding donations (where people are taxpayers) adds 25% to each pound given. £25,000 is a big target but of we all play our part I’m sure we can help the school reach it.
